Starting a baking blog can be a lot of fun, and it doesn’t have to be difficult! While baking was my first true love, writing about it has been equally exciting. In this post on How to Start a Baking Blog, I will walk you through all of the steps needed to get started on your own baking blog. I’ll walk you through picking a name for your website, getting a domain name, choosing your web host and theme, writing your first blog post and more.
What’s a baking blog and why do I need one?
A baking blog is a website or micro-site created to share recipes and other information related to cooking, preparing, and eating baked goods like cakes, cookies etc. There are many reasons why you might want to start a baking blog: you’re a baker, blogger, recipe tester, professional chef or author looking for another avenue through which you can share your knowledge of food; you’re an amateur cook looking for an excuse to use your old recipe collection, or maybe it’s just because you’re interested in food and want to put your articles online for others to read.
Picking Your Blog Name
Picking the right name for your baking blog is the first step to getting your baking website up and running. Your blog name is more than just an address. It’s a brand, an extension of you and it should stand out as unique. When picking a name for your blog or website, think about the following things:
- What do you want to write about? Will it be baking recipes or tutorials on how to decorate a cake or maybe a diary of your daily baking activities?
- Once you know what you want to write about, consider relevant names you can name your blog. Brainstorm, create a mind map and see what you like or dislike.
Selecting Your Domain Name
In your journey of how to start a baking blog, the next step is to get your domain name. Ideally this should be the same or similar to your blog name. The domain name is the URL of your blog/website. For example, my blog’s name is Oven Bytes and my domain name is www.ovenbytes.com
It may be possible that the domain name you want has already been taken. To check the same you can use the following sites and see if your domain name is available, check the similar names, check which domain extensions are available etc.
- godaddy.com
Once you have a domain name, you need to purchase it. It can be on a recurring basis and each web hosting site has a different price for it. Here are a few of the sites I have used which may be helpful for you as well.
Hosting Your Blog
The next step is to create your website. There are many tools you can use for this, some of them are:
Creating your website on most of these platforms is very easy and requires no knowledge of writing code. They either have ready-to-use templates or the option to drag and drop various components directly onto your website.
My personal preference is WordPress. I used to use WIX and then moved over to WordPress. On WordPress, the process initially can seem a little overwhelming, but after a while, you will get the hang of it. Also, there are multiple videos, blogs, and tutorials to guide you on how to set up your website using WordPress available.
Writing Your First Blog Post
Writing your first blog post is kinda special! One of my key learnings about writing was “Don’t write about what you want but write about what the audience is searching for”. Whenever you write about a topic, it is important to know, is anyone even interested in reading it? Is anyone actually asking this question? Keyword research comes to play here. It is important to know, the topic you will write for, are people searching for your query on Google? Is it a very popular topic or niche? We can get into further details about this later.
Hopefully, this post will give you the information you need to jumpstart your own baking blog today. You should have no problem publishing your first post after reading this.
